Named the ‘Best Place to Live in the North West of England‘ by The Sunday Times in 2021, the last decade has seen Altrincham become a blueprint for the regeneration of towns, a destination described as “suburbia meets utopia“.
The market town saw a massive effort back in 2014 to turn the tide of decline, from a high street with the highest vacancy rate in the UK, to a bustling area filled with exciting independents in just a few years. Many attribute this to the Market, but there are a whole host of things that went right that reversed the decline into prosperity.
The town has become a bonafide foodie destination in those subsequent years, with everything from exquisite brunch, famous pasta dishes and the very freshest sushi served out of a 1950s airstream trailer. Altrincham is and always will be well worth a visit for any self-respecting lover of food…
Opening their rustic doors to the public back in 2018, Tre Ciccio have established themselves as one of the town’s most reliable and impressive eateries. Their menu is wholly unique, offering up wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas alongside their speciality – ‘Pollo Arrosto e Patate’ – Italian style sharing plates of roasted chicken with slow-cooked potatoes – inspired by restaurants in the south of the country serving ‘Pollo Scucchito’. No mention of Tre Ciccio should go without mentioning their amazing Rotolini – ahich are baked pizza bites stuffed with ham, cheese and tomato and are phenomenal.

A neighbourhood eatery that seemingly defies and dodges any kind of succinct classification, the best way anyone has ever described Blanchflower is to call it “Part Greasy-Spoon, Part Fine-Dining”. Open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, Blanchflower make everything in-house, from their flawless baked goods and cakes, right through to their sourdough bread, which is handmade over the course of 3 whole days (that’s 72 hours. Just for bread alone). Blanchflower has become a dependable addition to the streets of Altrincham, always innovating and improving their menu with some truly superb specials always on offer.

Opening up at the end of 2021, The Wild Goose took over an Altrincham institution – Francs on Goose Green – but has managed to continue the high standards and exceptional dishes that made that place so popular for more than 15 years. The Wild Goose serves up a regularly changing menu of ‘Anglo-French’ classics and retro-esque twists on old-school dishes – using only the very best ingredients. So you’ll find Steak Tartare made using the finest Hereford beef and topped with a Burford Brown egg, Lindisfarne oysters, Roasted Cumbrian Chicken Breast and one of the very best roast dinners in the entirety of Manchester (and Cheshire) served every week from 12pm.

Satisfyingly authentic through and through, Pico’s Tacos has impressed massively during their (relatively) short time at Altrincham Market, and when you’re up against people who have been there for 10 years – you really have to step up your game. It’s worked – as Picos are now hugely popular in the market, serving up hundreds of their homemade tacos and frozen margaritas every single weekend. You can’t go wrong with their classic Pork Carnitas – as Mexican as you can get. But they also offer up Cali- inspired Baja Fried Fish Tacos, alongside Jerusalem Artichoke and Portobello Mushroom options for the vegans and veggies. Their loaded Nachos are also very hard to beat – especially alongside a frozen tequila cocktail or an ice-cold beer.

What can be said about Sugo Pasta Kitchen that hasn’t already been said a million times before by thousands of people? This spot in Altrincham is Sugo’s OG, before they set out to take over Ancoats and the city’s suburbs, and was nestled perfectly on the fringes of the Market for years – a true hidden gem. Soon though, word got out and Sugo became massively popular and almost impossible to get a table at. As a result, they opened up a new spot in the heart of Ancoats, and very recently – in Stanley Square in Sale. The Altrincham restaurant is still the spiritual home of Sugo though, and you can’t beat tucking into their House Sugo pasta on the terrace outside with a bottle of wine.

Housed within the immensely popular Altrincham Market, Tender Cow have impressed visitors to the Victorian hub for around a decade now, and don’t seem to be slowing down. Specialising in rare breed grass-fed meat, plus a constantly changing and evolving menu of seasonal sides, it’s also not uncommon to see some of the more unusual or out-of-fashion cuts on the menu at Tender Cow – which makes it all the better. Braised Oxtail and Beef Shin sit alongside Hanger Steak, Pork Chops and Braised Ribs, all to be enjoyed alongside summer salads, grilled hispi cabbage and brunch dishes that you won’t mind waking up early to get a seat for.

A Thai offering that’s absolutely adored by the ALtincham locals, ‘Nahm Prik’ actually means condiments in Thai – an opportunity for the owners to highlight how important the finest and freshest ingredients are to their menu – which is extensive, to say the least. It might take you more than 10 minutes to read, but as you’d expect it’s full of classic Thai dishes that you all know and love, plus some of the more unique offerings from regions across the country. There are extensive veggie options, plus a widely applauded Gluten Free menu, and a dedicated Vegan menu too.

Recipients of countless awards over the years, Great North Pie Co. offer up exceptionally high-quality pies – with everything from the butter content of the pastry, to the source of every ingredient in their filling – completely considered, tested, and perfected over the years. Their menu of pies is always changing with the seasons, and so there’s always something different to get your teeth into. If there’s only one pie which you get to try though, make sure it’s their Classic Lancashire Cheese & Onion – a truly wonderful creation that’s made using Dewlay’s Lancashire cheese and combine it with caramelised onions, nutmeg and Japanese panko breadcrumbs. It’s amazing.

Taking the short, but nonetheless rather daunting, hop over from Chester back in 2016, the team at Porta quickly managed to establish themselves as a tapas tour de force in Altrincham, and have since expanded even further into Salford’s Chapel Street. Restauranteur brothers Ben and Joe Wright have managed to enamour the people of Altrincham for years now with their informal Iberian menu that features a wealth of tapas bar classics, all made in-house. Expect dishes like tomato bread, purple sprouting broccoli with romesco, croquetas del dia and enough Jamon Iberico to sink a ship. Unpretentious and comfortable, Porta is the perfect spot to relax with good food, beer and wine.

This Middle Eastern restaurant is nigh-on unbeatable when it comes to their mezze and kebabs, a testament to the fact that they’ve managed to expand across into many of Manchester’s suburbs over the years. Their huge menu of Lebanese and Syrian dishes can often be overwhelming, but it’s full of absolute corkers, many of which you’ve never heard of before – never mind tasted. One of my favourite dishes is the Tabakh Rawhou, an aubergine, onion and courgette stew that’s filled with tender pieces of lamb and served on a bed of rice. There’s also all of your favourite big-hitters, from hummus to halloumi, shawarma to whole sea bass – all at a very reasonable price point too.

The sushi masters of Altrincham, UNAGI arrived back in 2019 in their shiny retro caravan and have been impressing locals and visitors alike ever since. During the pandemic they really found their feet, serving up the freshest sushi, sashimi and street food to thousands of people week-in, week-out, come rain or shine. Again, Altrincham’s streets have proven to be the perfect jumping-off point for the UNAGI team, expanding to their very own sushi bar in Wilmslow, and more recently opening up a small shipping container village on the outskirts of the city centre in the Green Quarter.

A slicker cousin to Nahm Prik, Phanthong first opened its doors back in 2012, taking over the former Grapes Pub on Regent Road. Since then they’ve grown to include a second venue in Wilmslow and a third in Sandbach, each one offering up authentic Thai dishes that won’t break the bank. Every Sunday they also offer a ‘Sunday Service’ where you can enjoy an ‘all-you-can-eat’ style dinner, but instead of a buffet they instead bring the dishes out to your table from a regularly rotating menu of starters, curries, noodles and stir-fries.

This Brazilian Rodizio-style restaurant only opened at the beginning of 2022, a slick all-you-can-eat offering with endless grilled meats, sides and salads from the co-founder of Fazenda. Robert Melman, an Argentinian who now lives in Altrincham, opened up the South American restaurant in the town’s old Post Office, which had been unoccupied for more than a year. The finest cuts of locally sourced meat, flame-grilled and brought to your table – including Brazil’s favourite cut – Picanha, Chorizo, Rump, Gammon Lamb, Ribeye and Fraldinha flank steak. Plus – all the veg, salads, cheeses and a selection of lighter dishes and veggie and vegan mains.

A colossal undertaking of a bar and restaurant, The Con Club offers everything from breakfast and brunch through to evening dinner, huge sushi platters, their own micro-brewery, live music, DJs, sports, events, cocktails, a sake menu and one of the very best roast dinners available in Altrincham. This place certainly has a ‘vibe’ and it’s one of Altrincham’s most popular spots, especially on the weekends. Housed in the old Conservative Club (hence the name), the menu at The Con Club is as eclectic as everything else in there, ranging from steaks, pub classics, Japanese-inspired mains, salads, to their ‘Raw Bar & Sushi’ offering with nigiri, sashimi, oysters, ceviche, and uramaki. There truly is something for everyone in here – and it’s also a blast!

Another staple of Altrincham Market, Honest Crust pretty much heralded the arrival of the Neapolitan pizza into Manchester, paving the way for future playmakers Rudy’s. Honest Crust’s specialist sourdough bases come topped with a dazzling assortment of local and seasonal ingredients, and they’re not too shy of collaborating with local chefs and restaurants here either. They recently got together with Manchester Urban Diggers to create a pizza topped with locally grown vegetables from Platt Fields Market Garden, and have also done pies with the likes of Bundobust, Runway Brewery and Mughli.

This Chinese restaurant went viral back in 2021 with their bottomless brunch and lunch offering, which comes with unlimited food and drinks and starts from just £25 per person. The menus include some excellent dumplings, bao buns and noodle and rice bowls, plus an extensive offering of cocktails, wines and beers, including Prosecco and Tsing Tao. There are two sessions every single day, and they’ve proved to be one of Altrincham’s most impressive eateries, and certainly one of the most popular.

Located right in the heart of Altrincham’s market district in the One Central shipping container village, Choza specialises in Mexican street food, from burritos to nachos, tequila to some of the best tacos you’ll ever taste – they do it. Being out on the terrace is perfect for this sort of food, and they’ve recently introduced a new Breakfast Menu with torta sandwiches, breakfast burritos and loaded quesadillas. Personally though, it’s all about their tacos, of which the Teriyaki Barbacoa, a Mexican-Japanese fusion that’s the best by a country mile and topped with slow-cooked beef brisket, wasabi, pink ginger and black sesame.
