BOISE, Idaho — Riley Romazko and her fiancé Julien Rivera were among the first to buy a shipping container home at Caritas Commons, a cluster of single-family houses built for limited-income residents on a quiet street in an older Boise neighborhood.
Romazko, 27, who runs an online naturopath consultancy and Rivera, 29, who owns a small moving company, had been living for three years with Romazko's mother and her boyfriend in nearby Nampa, and they were eager to find their own place. But as the median sales price in Ada County reached $595,000 earlier this year, Romazko said owning their own home looked increasingly out of reach.

Mills played Division III college football and was not drafted. That made his rise to stardom with the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers all the more remarkable. Jim Mora was Mills' head coach in the USFL and in New Orleans. Mora says those who saw Mills as an overachiever missed the fact that he “was just that good.” Mills was Carolina assistant coach when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. The Asian Football Confederation has confirmed a new qualifying format to cater for its expanded number of direct entries allotted for a 48-team World Cup in 2026. The governing body for soccer in Asia says a four-round qualifying system has been designed in preparation for the eight direct spots and single intercontinental playoff slot allocated to the AFC following the expansion of the World Cup. Apart from host Qatar, Asia had four direct entries for the 32-team 2022 World Cup which kicks off in November. Iran, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Japan earned those automatic places. Australia beat United Arab Emirates in an Asian playoff and then beat Peru in an intercontinental playoff to secure another spot in Qatar.

The Australian Parliament is considering a bill that would lift a 25-year-old ban on two territories legalizing voluntary euthanasia. The Parliament legislated the ban in 1997 after the Northern Territory became the first place in the world to legalize assisted suicide. Now the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory are the only parts Australia where assisted dying is banned. The Parliament does not have the same constitutional power over the states which have each introduced their own laws allowing mercy killing of the dying. Government lawmakers Luke Gosling and Alicia Payne introduced to the House of Representatives on Monday a bill that would allow the two territories' legislatures to legalize euthanasia.

Turkey’s defense ministry says the first ship carrying Ukrainian grain will set off from the port of Odesa on Monday. The ministry says the Sierra Leone-flagged cargo ship, Razoni, which has been loaded with corn, will depart Odesa for Lebanon at 0530 GMT. A statement from the ministry said other ships would also depart Ukraine’s ports through the safe corridors in line with deals signed in Istanbul on July 22, but did not provide further details. Russia and Ukraine signed separate agreements with Turkey and the U.N. clearing the way for Ukraine — one of the world’s key breadbaskets — to export 22 million tons of grain and other agricultural goods that have been stuck in Black Sea ports because of Russia’s invasion.

A cultural center known for chronicling Appalachian life is cleaning up and assessing its losses. Like much of its stricken region, Appalshop has been swamped by historic flooding. The water inundated downtown Whitesburg in southeastern Kentucky, causing extensive damage to the renowned repository of Appalachian history and culture. Some losses are likely permanent, after raging waters soaked or swept away some of Appalshop’s treasure trove of historic material. That includes archives documenting the region's past. Appalshop executive director Alex Gibson says it's “gut-wrenching” to see the damage. But sounding the same note as others in the region, he says Appalshop will recover.
