By Jeff Mason and Michael MartinaWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Monday it expects China to step up its response to a possible visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in the coming days and that the U.S. will not be intimidated. .China's actions could include launching missiles near Taiwan, large-scale air or naval activities or other "spurious claims" such as Beijing's assertion that the Taiwan Strait is not an international waterway, the spokesman said. White House national security voice John Kirby told reporters."We will not take the bait or engage in a threat of war. At the same time, we will not be intimidated," he said.Pelosi has the right to visit Taiwan, the White House said, adding that China appeared prepared to respond, possibly with military provocations.Pelosi is due to visit Taiwan on Tuesday, three people briefed on the matter said, while China warned its military would never "stand idly by" if she visited the self-governing island claimed by Beijing.Kirby said that nothing about Pelosi's possible trip changes US policy toward Taiwan, and that Beijing was well aware that the division of powers within the US government meant Pelosi would make her own decisions about the visit."The Speaker of the House has the right to visit Taiwan, and a Speaker of the House has visited Taiwan before without incident, as have many members of Congress, including this year," Kirby said."There is no reason for Beijing to turn a potential visit consistent with long-standing US policy into some sort of crisis or conflict, or use it as a pretext to increase aggressive military activity in or around the Taiwan Strait." .Swiss policy strives to maintain the country's neutrality in the face of an increasingly unilateralist world policy.SWI swissinfo.ch - branch of the Swiss broadcasting society SRG SSRYour data is used to pre-populate some form fields.A confirmation email has been sent to your address.Please click on the link in the email to activate your account.Please enter your email address.You will receive a link to reset your password.A password reset email has been sent to your address.Please click the link in the email to reset your password.Your account is linked toPlace of residence (optional)Participate in our discussions.You can find an overview of ongoing debates with our journalists here.An increasing number of people in Switzerland have chosen a vegetarian or vegan diet for various reasons.What are your experiences?Participate in our discussions.You can find an overview of ongoing debates with our journalists here.An increasing number of people in Switzerland have chosen a vegetarian or vegan diet for various reasons.What are your experiences?With our newsletters you get the best stories in your inbox.The SRG SSR privacy policy provides additional information on data processing.Select any of the newsletters below to "Subscribe" with your email address {0}
